HELPING WOMEN SIZE UP BODY IMAGE
WITH A FILM ABOUT BRAS

Once reserved for customers only, Magda is now lending her grandmotherly wisdom to the documentary’s outreach campaign along with filmmakers Faye Lederman, Cheryl Furjanic and Eve Lederman. Drawing together women of diverse ages, backgrounds and cup sizes, the film catalyzes discussion about body image and self-esteem, generating powerful personal assessments and compelling dialogue. A recent screening at the Lower East Side Girls Club generated discussion about breast size and self- acceptance among a mix of Latina and African American teenagers, and sixty women gathered for a religious retreat developed “breast monologues” as performance pieces after viewing.

In conjunction with the A GOOD UPLIFT’s PBS television premiere on July 22, the directors will kick off the film’s national outreach campaign with ten screenings in New York City throughout the broadcast week. The YWCA center for girls is programming the film on Monday, July 19 as part of a day long event called “Every Body is Beautiful,” and Girls Inc. of New York City will hold a screening for young women on Thursday, July 15. Using a study guide developed by the filmmakers, moderators will explore participants’ reaction to the characters in relation to their own body image while delivering Magda’s message that beautiful bodies come in all shapes and sizes (though a good uplift always helps!).
